D-Day Landing sites & beaches
On June 6th 1944, the Allies landed on the Normandy coast with the mission to liberate Europe. Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword … these were the code names used for the D-Day landing beaches. Many vestiges of the Battle of Normandy have been preserved to this day. Located opposite the Utah Beaches, the campsite is just 4½ miles from the Crisbecq German battery at Saint Marcouf de l’Isle.
Observe the remains of the artificial harbor Mulberry at Arromanches to become aware of the extent of logistics that was deployed at the time. In the Bessin you will also find the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy in Bayeux which traces the battles that followed the D-Day. Take the opportunity to visit the cemeteries and historical sites that pay homage to the soldiers, such as the Normandy American Military Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville-sur-Mer. Many sites are open to visit all along the coast of Nacre in Calvados and around the city of Caen.
The D-Day museums
Get more insight into the massive military operation code named “Overlord“, and visit the wide range of museums dedicated to D-Day. The Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, only 5½ miles from the campsite, recounts the epic tale of the 101st and 82nd Airborne parachutists. Retrace the adventures of the soldiers that were airdropped over the Normandy villages.
Not far from the campsite you’ll also discover the D-Day Landing museum at Utah Beach (Sainte-Marie-du-Mont), the Quinéville Liberty museum, the D-Day Experience in Saint-Côme-du-Mont, the Liberation museum of Cherbourg and the Zeppelin hangar of Ecausseville. Take time to visit the Dead’s Man Corner which offer a rich collection of objects that belonged to the men of the 6th German Parachute Regiment. They established in this same place their command post to resist to the American offensive.

Every year around June 6th, many festivities are organised in this part of France to celebrate the anniversary of the Normandy D-Day landings. It’s an international event which fills the towns and villages surrounding the D-Day beaches with people from all over the world. Along with the official commemorative ceremonies that take place you can see reconstructed camps, military vehicle parades, conferences, exhibitions… Don’t miss the famous parachutings!
